Random Rock Playlist: Alternative Metal
It's time to talk about one of the most awesome genres (in my opinion, IDK if other people agree with me or not since I'm not everyone on Earth) of all time. We're talking about late 80's and 90's scene here when Alternative music was finally taking root and became such an inspiring genre of sooo much feedback, it was also cool when bands and artists alike also added a side of classic Heavy Metal, thus creating Alternative Metal.
Helmet
Alternative Metal, as stated, started when bands around the mid 80's decided to play Heavy Metal roots while experimenting with other genres, some not even affiliated with Metal music at the time. As Alternative music started to rise with each year, so did interest in Alternative Metal acts deciding to add more distinctive sound, with the inclusion of Grunge which started in the late 80's. Later in the late 90's, Alternative Metal mostly became Nu Metal in response to having a more aggressive tone than it's predecessor, and relied more on Thrash Metal and even Hip Hop.
Nine Inch Nails
Many bands, like every other band in the world, try to distance themselves from being labeled Alternative Metal (or like any genre they think sounds weird to apply to them because they're trying to create somewhat of a unique sound that is somewhat their trademark......somewhat) Even some claim that Nu Metal is the actual term for Alternative Metal, and that Alternative Metal is just a gimmicky nickname for Nu Metal (Like Hair Metal is to Glam Metal since Glam Metal bands overdid their electrocution look)
Sinergia
I on the other hand, don't believe it since obviously it's in the sound and delivery that gives Alternative Metal it's own distinct style. Just pay attention for a minute, most Alternative Metal bands tend to mix with other Alternative or Indie styles to create that distinction, clearly showing the classic Heavy Metal roots from the 60's and 70's era while mixing Noise Rock, Dream Pop, Lo-Fi, Funk Rock, Progressive Rock, Art Rock, Grunge, Hardcore Punk, Gothic Rock, Industrial Rock, among other genres. They broaden their sound all while still adding classic Heavy Metal riffs.
Lacuna Coil
Nu Metal on the other hand is different. Nu Metal is somewhat the same but focuses more on heavier Metal riffs, kickass grooves and frequent rapping sometimes, sometimes even adding Industrial or Hardcore Punk influences into the mix. Mostly anything that sounds extremely heavy, a little Headbangers Ball dance oriented, with some Hip Hop. But in rare times do they ever cross over to Alternative music. That's the difference between Alternative Metal and Nu Metal bands.
